Event-based fractional order control of general anaesthesia

Controlling the anesthesia and hemodynamic systems together as one multivariable process. New control actions are computed only when the patient's state or the surgery calls for them.

Summary

The project proposes controlling the combined anesthesia and hemodynamic system as a single multivariable process, using event-based fractional-order control. Surgical stimuli and drug boluses are treated as events that trigger a new computation of the control law.

The aim is a better closed-loop response during both induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. It also addresses intra-patient variability, such as changing drug dosages, and inter-patient variability, using data from 24 patients.

Objectives

  • Model the coupled anesthesia–hemodynamic system for multivariable control design.
  • Develop event-based fractional-order controllers triggered by surgical stimuli and bolus administration.
  • Improve closed-loop performance during induction and maintenance of anesthesia.
  • Ensure robustness to intra- and inter-patient variability, validated on a configurable patient simulator.
